BBC IDEAS ︱ PSYCHOLOGY

cC

Mosaic was commissioned by BBC Ideas for a series of three videos in partnership with The Open University.

Drawing on Mosaic’s history (and mild obsession) with all things psychological, these films look at the fascinating ways in which cognitive psychology explains how we perceive the world we live in. From the initial idea, through to scripts and animation - the objective was to find interesting ways to represent research focussing on memory, attention and perception and what this tells us about being human. Whether it’s the fallibility of our memories, the ways in which we can’t see the world as it “really” is or how our ability to multi-task is truly limited, these films show that psychology can inform us to learn new things about ourselves. Here, an evidence-based approach to the world is explored, changing our beliefs or attitudes towards one of the most important things- our own minds!

An animation style was chosen that ’s playful, engaging and informative. Using cut-outs, bold colours, photo archive and lively illustrations we chose a visual style and approach that would engage a wide audience. These videos proved successful with high levels of audience engagement, a testament to this approach. All films featured on The BBC News homepage and were praised by online commentators.

why we see faces in clouds

This videos answers questions related to perception and why we all see the world differently.

why your first memory is probably wrong

Memories feel clear to us but how much can we really trust them? Here we question our ability to recall events and the influence memory has on our identity.

can you really multitask? finally, an answer

With a hectic lifestyle we find ourselves stretched to the limit and wondering if we can really focus our attention on multiple tasks…
