‘Made In India’ is the first in the innovative ‘Made In…’ Series produced by DFG Films and now by Mosaic Films. Eight short documentaries made by Indian filmmakers on the eve of the 60th anniversary of Indian Independence, give very personal perspectives on what independence means to them.
The Broken Land
A lyrical journey down the Jessore road that separates West Bengal from Bangladesh, which evokes memories of the upheaval and displacement that affected the director’s family at the time of independence and partition.

Body British, Heart Hindustani
The Ambassador car is a common sight on roads all across India, and has become a measure of something “truly Indian”, and yet it has a history that connects it to British Colonialism. It is an English design that has been adopted by Indians and adapted to the Indian roads. Body British, Heart Hindustani is a light-hearted investigation into what the ‘Amby’ means to drivers, passengers and car lovers and what it symbolizes about India.

The House Remembers
The director goes back to visit the house where he was born, Holm Farm, a colonial bungalow in the foothills of the Himalayas. Here he uncovers the stories of two previous inhabitants of the house: a British colonial tea plantation owner and an Indian revolutionary freedom fighter.

English and I
An exploration of what it means to speak English in modern day India when it remains the principal language. The film considers what has changed about the language since colonial times and how people feel about using it.

Ms. Hemalatha had a traditional childhood and an arranged marriage at 17. Widowed and with her children grown up, Ms. Hemalatha re-married aged 70, an act that is perceived as shocking by many Indians today. Hemalatha’s story traces her journey towards personal independence and reveals much about Indian attitudes towards marrying for love and the status of older women in Indian society.

The Life of a Bada Sahib (Big Boss)
A film about the day-to-day life of a couple that manages an old colonial tea plantation in the Dooars, West Bengal. Life is dictated by tradition, a rigid hierarchy and, of course, the correct way of preparing, serving and drinking tea. What becomes apparent is the colonial sahib lifestyle survives in 2007 complete with all the uncomfortable contradictions of modern India.

A dance film in three parts which uses the medium of traditional Indian Kathak dance to examine the subject of independence. Conflict, control, dependence and interdependence are themes explored in the choreography of the two principle dancers. The colours of the Indian tricolour represent the changes in the relationship between young and old; tradition and modernity; power and domination.

The Talking Camera
Aged 94, South Asia’s first female photojournalist Homai Vyarawala is a formidable character. Looking through her landmark photographs she re-lives some of the most important events in the history of Indian independence and shares her thoughts on India in 2007.
